What does the Cash Out option do in Vampire Crawlers?

In the game Vampire Crawlers, exploring maps and defeating bosses leads to chests with valuable loot. Inside are often gems that can be inserted into special slots on cards to gain new abilities. However, when opening a chest the player is offered not only to take the gem, but also two other options: leave or “cash out” (Cash Out).
