Masters of Albion whisks you away to a medieval fantasy world where you’re tasked with building a thriving settlement and defending it against relentless hordes of undead enemies that descend every night. Managing construction, resources, and combat readiness within a day-night cycle can be daunting at first, especially since the game doesn’t always provide detailed explanations of its mechanics.

Fortunately, most mechanics are more forgiving than they initially seem. Knowing a few key strategies from the outset can significantly impact how smoothly your first few hours of play unfold. Here’s what you need to know before the first night falls.

Masters of Albion is currently in early access, so the details below are subject to change as the game develops.

Uncovering More Information About Orders

  • Save

Orders are the primary means of earning money in the game, and it’s crucial to meet the client’s specific requirements. Initially, an order might seem vague, such as a request for “something for smashing” from the weaponsmith.

Clicking on the order sheet reveals more detailed information about what the client wants. This is particularly important for food orders, as you’ll unlock many ingredients over time and the requests will become more specific and sometimes unusual.

Leveling Up Your Heroes

  • Save

Heroes gain experience by fighting enemies during night raids, but you don’t have to wait for an undead attack for them to continue progressing.

During the day, you can manually assign Heroes to the Hero Guild for training—it’s a slow process, but the days in Masters of Albion are long, and leaving Heroes idle means missing out on free progress. Make it a habit to check if they’re training when you’re not giving them other orders. You can even cancel their healing if needed.

Prioritizing Functionality Over Aesthetics

  • Save

Early on, you might be tempted to make your settlement look beautiful, but try not to prioritize aesthetics until you’ve built a solid foundation.

Buildings provide slots for decorative items, but filling those slots means sacrificing space for workstations, which are essential for your town’s functionality. Save the ornamentation for later, when you have the resources and free time to indulge.

Detonating Exploding Undead Early

  • Save

As you progress, you’ll encounter undead enemies carrying lit bombs on their backs. Up close, they’re far more dangerous than they appear.

A single hit with the “Lightning” spell is enough to instantly detonate them, so use it before they get near your buildings or citizens. The spell costs very little mana, making it one of the most efficient tools in the game.

Checking Night Events Before They Begin

  • Save

Before any night starts, always check the clickable notification at the top of the screen to see exactly what you’ll be facing. This essential preparation gives you the information needed to place Heroes and defensive structures correctly.

This is especially important on nights when you’re not just facing waves of enemies. Sometimes you’ll need to protect a moving group of pilgrims or complete special objectives. Going in blind, expecting a routine defense, can be an expensive mistake.

Poor Gear Is Better Than No Gear

  • Save

When you first unlock the ability to craft weapons and armor, you’ll likely only have materials for the lowest-tier items—simple daggers and rough clothing, for example.

Don’t let that stop you. Even the worst gear provides a noticeable stat boost to your Heroes. Equipping them at the earliest opportunity is a step that pays off quickly.

Don’t Rush

  • Save

There’s no pressure forcing you to start the next night until you feel ready. So make the most of the day. Expand your town, level up Heroes, and complete quests at a comfortable pace. However, don’t treat completing daytime quests as the sole task on your to-do list.

There’s plenty else you can do between goals. Mastering how to use every day before night arrives is what separates a well-prepared settlement from frantic last-minute scrambling.

Feel Free to Move Turrets

  • Save

During the tutorial, it’s easy to overlook, but turrets can be moved at any time, even during an invasion. This makes them far more valuable than static fortifications.

If an unexpected weak spot appears in your defense or a Hero is under fire they can’t handle, simply drag a turret to cover them. Treat them as flexible tools rather than permanent structures, and you’ll get far more out of them.
