Side quests are an integral part of Borderlands 4, and the “Whispering Glacier” region from the DLC is no exception. Among the nightmares and madness, you can find a story about a girl searching for her missing grandfather. However, this quest is not visible on the map – it needs to be unlocked by solving a small puzzle.
How to activate the “Fishing Under the Ice” quest

“Fishing Under the Ice” is a secret side quest available only in the “Ellie and the Temple of the Damned” DLC. To unlock it, you need to complete the first story mission of the “Abandoned Ice Shores” expansion and use your wits.
First, head to the “Crooked Teeth” region and look for fishing spots. They can be recognized by a chair and a bucket with dynamite at the edge of the shallow water. Several locations are:
Near the glacier, next to the “Edge of the World” fast travel point.
At the southern edge of the glacier, south of the same fast travel point, opposite a small frozen lake.
Once you find such a spot, examine the water surface. You need to notice a water splash with glittering particles. Take the dynamite from the bucket and throw it exactly into that spot. After the explosion, loot and a special audio log (Echo Log) will surface.

If you miss – don’t worry, the dynamite will reappear in the bucket after a few seconds, so you won’t miss the opportunity.
Use the grappling hook to pick up the log from the water or directly from the air. It will automatically play a message from someone named “Grumbler”. Repeat this process for three more glittering splashes nearby. After collecting all four audio logs, a new side quest will appear in the “Speakeasy” bar.
Where to find Old Man Trash

In the “Speakeasy” bar, find Marina at a table and talk to her. Then return to the “Whispering Glacier” through the “Ellie’s Garage” fast travel point, and drive through the canyon to the west to the edge of the map near the ocean.
Enter the round hut behind the ice block. Inside, on a pile of dead fish and blood, lies an audio log. Listen to it, take the dynamite from the nearby bucket, and throw it at the cracked ice behind the hut (where there will be trashers), managing to retreat before the explosion.
From the hole, Old Man Trash will emerge – a powerful trasher with two health bars. He acts like other bosses of this type (e.g., Icebreaker), so beware of his attacks, seismic waves, and small trashers that periodically appear during the battle. It’s quite possible to defeat him.
Save
After the victory, you will receive loot and a special quest item – Grumbler’s Hat. Pick it up, and Marina will call you, completing the quest. As a reward, you will receive experience and money.
Although the material reward is small, the main thing is progress in achieving “Looking for Work on the Edge of the World”, for which you need to complete all side quests in the “Whispering Glacier”. This is a mandatory step for those who plan to complete the DLC 100%.
