Mad Earl is back in Borderlands 4 as part of Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie and the Temple of the Damned. This time he’s not after iridium—he wants Vault Hunter blood. The mutated monster now known as Mad Earl has to be put down for good.

You’ll find him on Daphne’s Estate. Farming the boss can net you three legendaries: the Shoot-’n-Scoot pistol, the Barbarella grenade, and the super-rare pearlescent shotgun Mad Earl. Below is everything you need to know about the fight and the loot.

  • Mad Earl can be farmed at Daphne’s Estate in the northern part of the map.
  • From the manor, head right to find the cave where the boss spawns.
  • The fight has two phases: first he fights as a ground-based Thresher, then takes to the air.
  • He always has a red health bar, so fire damage is the most effective against him.

Legendary Item Type Special Effect
Mad Earl Pearlescent Shredder Shotgun BOGO—fires shards that stick in enemies. A melee hit on a tagged enemy detonates the shards, which then fly at nearby foes.
Barbarella Legendary Grenade Tentacles (effect still being clarified).
Shoot-’n-Scoot Legendary Torgue Pistol “Full Send”—phantom guns spawn from your previous bullet impacts. Effect resets on reload.

Mad Earl can drop three items: two legendary guns and one pearlescent. Most players will chase the pearlescent shotgun for its rarity, but is it worth it? Mad Earl is basically a gimmick weapon that forces you to risk getting up close, so it’s safe to skip.

As for Barbarella and Shoot-’n-Scoot, they’re fairly middle-of-the-road legendaries. They’re fine for filling out your collection, but there are better pistols and grenades you can use full-time.
