In Vampire Crawlers, there are numerous items and mechanics that alter the game’s rules, starting characteristics, and allow for the creation of powerful builds. One of the key elements that aid in runs is gems.

Gems can be found in various ways, but it’s essential to understand their basics from the start. In this guide, we’ll explain how gems work, why they’re crucial, and where to find them.

Gems are unique items that add enhancements and bonuses to your cards. When you pick up a gem, a window appears with all cards in your deck that have an available slot. Place the gem in the slot, and every time you draw that card, the gem’s effect will be activated.

Additional gem slots for any card can be obtained from the Blacksmith.

There are over 50 gems in the game, and they need to be unlocked before they start appearing in runs. Here are some of them:

  • Double and Triple Damage: Increase the card’s damage by two or three times.
  • Copy: The card is copied when used.
  • Armor: Adds armor to the character.
  • Draw: You draw an additional card.
  • Light Combo: The card receives a combo multiplier bonus, regardless of the mana ascension rules, but you lose the combo.
  • Luck: Increases the “Luck” characteristic.
  • Return: The card does not consume mana when used.

As you can see, there are gems that increase characteristics (mostly only for the current encounter, not for the entire run), activate specific effects, and affect mana consumption.

You can check how to unlock each gem in the “Discovery” building in your village.

It’s worth noting that, unlike cards, gems are not affected by the combo multiplier. A gem that gives 20% luck will always give the same amount.

Gems can be found in three ways:

  • Opening regular or boss chests — there’s a chance to get a gem.
  • Opening purple locked chests, which require sacrificing cards of the same color as the lock.
  • Leveling up — when gaining a new level, you can choose a gem.

The higher your “Luck” characteristic, the more chances you have to get four rewards instead of three, and therefore, more opportunities to get gems.
