Windrose is a survival game that drops you into the golden age of piracy and expects you to keep things under control. You spawn, glance around, and within minutes you’re scooping up random sticks, getting clobbered by enemies who act way too sure of themselves, and wondering why everything around you is so eager to see you dead.
Crafting, exploration, and the noble art of not dying are all equally important. If you’re careless, the first hour turns into an endless loop: gather resources, feel hopeful, die, repeat. This guide will help you make sense of the early chaos. The beginner tips below will get you on your feet faster so you can enjoy exploring the world instead of constantly respawning on the beach. Let’s dive in!
Windrose is currently in Early Access, so details in this guide may change over time.
Master build-mode controls as soon as possible
One of the first things to learn is camera and build-mode control. While building, press Q for precise placement and V to raise the camera angle—both make it much easier to line structures up correctly.
Practice slapping down simple pieces before you start on a full base so you get used to the snap system and camera handling.
One of Windrose’s handiest features is the ability to build almost anywhere. That freedom lets you set up camps near resources or along exploration routes like caves. Instead of locking yourself into one spot too early, use the flexibility to adapt as you learn the game.
Grab logs and stones first
Early survival boils down to collecting basic materials. Logs and stones are your starting currency, used to craft essential tools like the axe and pickaxe.
Focus on scooping them up right after you spawn—loot everything around you to unlock new resources faster.
Gather more than you think you need; early crafting snowballs quickly as new recipes appear.
Craft a bigger bag ASAP
Inventory space vanishes fast, so crafting the Tattered Canvas Bag should be an early priority. You’ll need two pieces of coarse cloth and one rope, both made from plant fiber—materials you can collect right at the start without picking a fight.
Extra slots make exploring and gathering far smoother, sparing you constant trips back to storage.
Stay alive with smart healing and cautious combat
Healing is another survival pillar, and Bandages are your most reliable early option. They’re cheap to craft at a workbench—just one piece of coarse cloth. Since enemies hit hard at first, you’ll take damage often; keeping a stack of bandages on hand lets you survive longer scraps.
As mentioned, combat can be brutal early on. Enemies are strong at the start, and when you die your loot stays at the corpse. You can retrieve it, but reckless fights can still set you back. Take your time, learn enemy attack patterns, and avoid mindless rushing.
Heal proactively—don’t wait until your health is critically low.
Explore the world for chests and loot
Exploration is one of the best ways to get stronger early.
Look for chests, especially in coastal shipwrecks; they often hold weapons, crafting materials, and other handy resources.
That early boost can save you from relying purely on crafting.
Use targeting to control fights
In combat, press T to lock onto an enemy. You can also enable auto-targeting in the settings if you prefer a steadier aim. This makes fights easier to manage, especially against multiple or faster foes.
Remember: you can’t pause
Keep in mind that the game can’t be paused. Time and awareness matter even while you’re in menus or inventory. Always make sure the area is safe before opening menus or crafting in dangerous zones.
Use coconuts for early sustenance
Food is easy to find if you know where to look. Coconuts drop from palm trees and are a great early snack. They’re simple to harvest and keep your stamina up during long hikes without requiring complex cooking right away.
Grab coconuts whenever you pass a palm, even if you don’t need them immediately—they stack well as emergency rations.
Mark important spots on the map for easier navigation
Finally, use the map system to stay organized. You can right-click on the map to place custom markers, and if you tick the box to show them on the minimap, they’ll stay visible. This is especially handy for marking your home base.
