The new “Free Lanes” update and the “Terran Armada” expansion for Starfield have added raids, a dangerous faction threatening the systems, a new way to explore the stars, and X-Tech – a powerful resource for crafting.

X-Tech can be used to upgrade weapons, backpacks, suits, helmets, and ships, providing huge benefits, but obtaining it in large quantities is not easy. Here’s everything you need to know about using X-Tech and the best ways to get it.

How to Get X-Tech

X-Tech was introduced with the Free Lanes update and is available to all players, although most of this resource can be found during Terran Armada invasion events. It is mainly found in the following locations:

  • Containers, such as science crates
  • Captain’s quarters on ships
  • Tables and other surfaces
  • Enemies (mainly Terran Armada)
  • X-Tech extractor

Many enemies you defeat in Terran Armada missions have X-Tech on them. It can also be obtained by completing invasion events – a combat mechanic available only in the Terran Armada expansion.

How to Use X-Tech

X-Tech is used to modify legendary effects or add new ones to equipment or ships. This can be done at a workbench or a ship optimization terminal.

The mechanics work as follows: you can add more legendary modifications to legendary equipment or upgrade a low-rarity item by adding legendary mods.

New rarity levels:

Spend X-Tech and credits to get a new effect. With each added mod, the cost increases, so make sure you have enough resources before you start spending them on new legendary slots.

Save before you start spending X-Tech: if the effect doesn’t suit you, you can reload and try again.

Upgrading ship components is done simply through the optimization terminal. With X-Tech, you can upgrade:

  • Shield system
  • Weapon system
  • Engine
  • Gravitational drive
  • Other

Best effects for other items, such as helmet, suit, and weapon:

  • Chameleon (equipment): blends into the environment when crouching and stationary.
  • O2 filter (equipment): reduces oxygen consumption by 25%.
  • Hacker (equipment): +2 maximum automatic hacking attempts that can be accumulated.
  • Mirror (equipment): 4% chance to reflect attacks.
  • Hitman (weapon): +15% damage when aiming.
  • Extended magazine (weapon): doubles the base magazine capacity.
  • Provocation (weapon): deals double damage to targets with full health.
