Toward the end of Chapter 8 you’ll suddenly be playing as Damian, which can feel jarring—especially if you’ve poured everything into Cliff. Don’t panic: this guide will walk you through beating Lucien Bastie as default Damian, no upgrades required.

Lucien is a vicious opponent, and with a brand-new moveset you’ll want to know what to bring, which attacks to use, and what he’ll throw at you so you can counter it. Everything you need for the win is below.

As always, pack the basics:

  • Food (Grilled Meat is cheap, fast healing).
  • Palmarc Pills—in case you drop so you can self-rez.

A couple of skills make Damian’s life easier, especially if you’ve never touched him before:

  • Shield Throw Lv.1 (tap R3 to hurl a shield that hits enemies).
  • Punishing Lightning Lv.3 (hold R2 to call a spear of light; it can’t miss and you can spam it as long as you have stamina).

There’s a cheesy angle on Lucien: face the castle, jump onto the left-hand pillar, then spam Shield Throw (R3). He can’t touch you. For phase two you can hop off the arena or walk down the stairs—he rarely follows.

Attack Tactics vs. Lucien Bastie

  • Keep your distance.
  • Spam Shield Throw (R3) while locked on for safe damage.
  • Use Focus (L3+R3) to refill Spirit and keep Shield Throw going; it also slows time so you can read his tells.
  • Spam Punishing Lightning (R2) to rain spears—huge damage, counts as a heavy.
  • When he closes in, spam Dodge (Circle) to backflip away.
  • Alternatively pop Focus, watch for the flash, and tap L1 to parry for a free punish.
  • Stay at range—his melee is brutal.

Lucien Bastie’s Moveset (and How to Counter)

  • He slams his mace into the ground, sending a volcanic shockwave—sidestep it.
  • He spins the mace, charging a killer combo. Interrupt with Shield Throw; if he finishes, dodge the hail of blows.
  • Two mace swings followed by an unblockable leaping smash. Parry the first two, dodge the third.
  • During his invuln phase the screen darkens and he tries to juggle you with fire—keep rolling.

Attack Tactics vs. Awakened Lucien Bastie

  • Wait for him to swing, then dodge.
  • He’ll freeze or stroll for a few seconds—your damage window.
  • Hit hard but keep enough stamina to dodge the follow-up.
  • Shield Throw and Punishing Lightning still work great from range.

Awakened Lucien Bastie’s Moveset (and How to Counter)

  • He rams his sword-arm into the ground—parry window is tiny, so dodge instead.
  • He sometimes stands still; free hits.
  • He teleports and spawns clones that slam the ground then vanish. If he blinks, dodge immediately.
  • You’ll need to be a bit more aggressive; his attacks are fewer but faster and deadlier.
  • His main combo: lunge, teleport, strike, teleport again. Too fast to parry—dodge.
  • During his invuln phase he blinks around non-stop; spam dodge until it ends.
