When managing your Parafolk in Paralives, you’ll want to make friends—and maybe even find someone special. Building relationships here is more in-depth than in many other life sims, and your Character’s traits greatly influence how easily they connect with others.

Here’s everything you need to know about forming friendships, romantic interests, or even rivalries, plus some tips for strengthening those bonds.

Paralives is currently in early access, and content is subject to change. We’ll update this guide as needed.

How to Build Relationships with Other Parafolk

  • Save

As you might expect, relationships grow through shared activities and social interaction. You can send your Character to chat with others by clicking on them and selecting “Talk.”

Conversation Topics

When the interaction meter fills, you’ll be presented with three conversation topics to choose from. These options are determined by your Character’s personality, needs, recent experiences, and your current relationship status.

If your Character is a Jokester, they might want to tell a joke, while a Serious Character might prefer to share a fact. They might brag about achieving a goal or, if they value solitude, make an excuse to leave.

Relationship Stages

  • Save

While socializing, your Storyteller will offer special options that unlock new relationship stages, such as “Acquaintance,” “Friend,” “Romantic Interest,” “Partner,” “Fiancé/Fiancée,” and more.

Reaching a new stage with someone unlocks additional interaction options and actions, letting you deepen your connection.

In a Group

When your Character spends time with another, you can engage in group interactions.

Even if you send one of them to the bathroom, the other will obediently follow suit (though they might feel awkward continuing the conversation!).

Choosing “Talk” with another Character automatically forms a group, and their portrait will appear beside your Character’s. Clicking their portrait removes them from the group.

How to Develop Relationships

It’s no surprise that building relationships takes effort and quality time together, but some connections require more work than others.

The success of certain conversation options depends on several factors.

For some interactions, especially those that advance your relationship stage (like flirtatious moves), a success percentage will be displayed.

The base value starts at 0 but is influenced by multiple factors. Your Character’s mood, traits, and other personal qualities can help or hinder the conversation, and some factors depend on the other person too.

For example, a Jokester usually gets a positive boost, but if you’re trying to romance a Jokester with a Serious Character, you’ll lose points due to clashing moods—a hefty 20-point penalty!

Relationship stages and current emotions also play a role. For instance, if one or both Characters feel embarrassed (maybe after a failed flirtation), that results in negative points.

How to Become Friends

Becoming friends is straightforward: keep socializing and choose positive conversation topics while avoiding insults or actions that cause discomfort.

How to Become Enemies

Becoming enemies is simply the reverse of making friends.

To turn hostile, insult the other Character and choose the most negative interaction options until they despise you.

Later, you can try to reconcile by carefully selecting positive topics.

However, once enemies, your options will skew heavily negative. Rebuilding a positive relationship will require maximum effort, choosing only the few positive cards that appear.

How to Build Romantic Relationships

There are several romantic stages, such as “Romantic Interest,” “Partner,” “Fiancé/Fiancée,” “Potential Co-Parent,” and more.

To progress, you need to advance through these stages by unlocking and developing each relationship label.

If flirtatious or relationship-advancing options aren’t succeeding, use Story Cards to boost your social or romantic interactions.

Based on our play experience, major milestones like moving in, getting engaged, or having a child become available after you select them as a Desire. This Desire appears as an option tied to an emotion once the relationship is strong enough.

After choosing the Desire, a conversation will present an interaction option that lets you take that step.
