In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream your island expands as you add new Mii characters. The more you interact with the residents, increase the population, and develop infrastructure, the more space becomes available. The growth rate directly depends on your activity in the game.
The island size increases gradually as you progress. The arrival of new Mii and overall activity on the island unlock additional plots at the edges of the map. Growth reflects the life and activity on the island, rather than being the result of deliberate construction.
At first you learn to manage the Mii, solve their problems, and build relationships. The island starts at a convenient size, but as the population grows you’ll want more space for new activities and buildings. After completing the tutorial and creating eight Mii you can begin expanding the island. This happens as you help your characters daily; even small tasks contribute to progress. If you ignore the Mii, growth will slow, so regular play is the key to development.

The island expands upon reaching the following population thresholds:
- First expansion – 10 Mii
- Second expansion – 20 Mii
- Third expansion – 35 Mii
There is a growth limit. At most 70 Mii can reside on the island at once, meaning the territorial expansion will eventually stop. Fortunately, you can delete older Mii to free up space for new ones.
