In Directive 8020, puzzles and code locks are few and far between, but when they do appear, they can be quite time-consuming to solve, and progressing the story depends on it. One of the most challenging puzzles can be found in Episode 5, where Cooper needs to identify the correct chemical agents.
To solve this puzzle, you’ll have to gather clues from around the room and match them to get the right answer, which can be confusing at first. Below, we’ll break down how to solve this puzzle and what the final chemical combination will be.
Cracking the chemical-agents puzzle in Directive 8020
When you first encounter the puzzle, start by examining the Synthesis of Diazepam stand, which displays three chemical structures as molecular diagrams. Try to commit them to memory or take a screenshot for later reference.
Next, walk around the room and inspect the other stands, each listing the name of a specific molecular structure. Your goal is to find the three chemicals that match the structures shown on the “Synthesis of Diazepam” stand.
The three required chemicals are:
- Chloroacetyl chloride
- Ammonia
- Dimethyl sulfate

Now that you know the names, head to the storage cabinet and examine the chemicals, noting the number assigned to each. Press the read button on your gamepad or keyboard to get a clearer view of the information and make it easier to record the numbers.
Here are the number combinations for the chemicals:
- Chloroacetyl chloride = 1
- Ammonia = 6
- Dimethyl sulfate = 8
Enter the code 168 in the cabinet to mix the chemicals, completing this part of the puzzle and allowing Cooper to obtain a sedative for Mr. Williams.
Before moving on, make sure to collect all the secrets in this area to avoid having to return later.
