Morbid Metal is a roguelike action game that launches into Early Access with two biomes. Each one throws you into corridors packed with enemy waves and reward chests, but the real test is the boss waiting at the end. These fights will push your skills to the limit.
Saru is the first boss of the starter biome, the Elevated Garden. Picture a towering cyborg gorilla that fights exactly like one. Below are the best tips for beating Saru in Morbid Metal and walking away victorious.
How to Beat Saru
Phase One
At the start of the fight Saru will leap at you and slam the ground with both fists. Dodge or dash away, then use the short opening that follows to land a few hits.
Next comes a two-hit combo straight ahead. Again, you’ll have a brief window—aim for the back so the boss can’t counter.
Before the fight, try to max out your Protocol gauge and queue up your super so you can open with heavy damage.
Watch for Saru’s body glowing red right before he smashes both fists and sends a shockwave across the entire arena. You can hop over it, but if you want to be efficient, start airborne and swing at his back the moment you see the red glow—the fist slam can’t reach you while you’re in the air.
Last thing for this phase: Saru will periodically hop back and fire two shockwaves in a row. Time your jumps and you’re safe.
Phase Two
Once you drain Saru’s first health bar, he leaps onto a high platform and phase two begins. From up there he fires his fists at you one by one.
He’ll do this four times. Retreat to the edge of the arena and dash just before a fist hits the ground to avoid damage. A red circle marks each impact spot.
After the fourth shot Saru jumps down. The tricky part: after a chest-thump and roar, auto-targeting shuts off. Keeping the camera on the boss is awkward, so count three seconds after the roar and dodge sideways.
If you haven’t upgraded your health, Saru can delete you in a few hits—dodge everything.
After landing, he punches the ground and three shockwaves ripple out in a row. Jump them and sneak in aerial attacks while you’re off the ground.
Note: you won’t get another damage window; Saru hops back to the platforms once the waves end.
Phase Three
In the final phase Saru opens by firing several fists straight ahead. Step aside and you’re safe, then watch for his leaping attacks.
He reuses the phase-one combo, mixes in fist slams and shockwaves, and—new twist—when his body glows, three laser beams sweep out; dash through them.
If you see electricity charging in his arm, hit him a couple of times and retreat—he’ll plant a device in the ground. Walk past it and it triggers multiple shockwaves; jump them.
Last thing: Saru fires lasers at hand level. Don’t jump when you see them coming (his chest glows red); stay grounded and keep swinging.
Rewards for Beating Saru
Defeating Saru unlocks the second biome, the Steel Sanctum, where the third playable character awaits. You’ll also receive a Soul Core.
