Regular disk cleanup helps free up space and maintain system stability. In this guide, we will look at the main methods of disk cleanup on Windows and macOS, as well as ways to prevent the storage from being refilled with unnecessary files.
What is a hard drive
Windows creates restore points and temporary update files that sometimes take up a lot of space.
- Open Settings — Windows Update.
- In the Update History, you can see installed updates and delete outdated restore points, keeping only the relevant ones.
Manual cleanup
For manual cleanup, use storage analysis:
- Go to Settings — Storage and explore the large categories. Most often, third-party programs and the Other section take up the most space.
- Open the folders and sort the contents by size to determine what can be deleted.
Programs for Windows
CCleaner
One of the most famous utilities for removing temporary files, browser caches, and installer junk. The main window allows you to perform a quick assessment of the system’s state, after which you can run an analysis and delete the found files. If necessary, advanced settings are available, where you can manually select categories for cleaning.
BleachBit
A more open and transparent alternative to CCleaner. Deletes temporary files, cache, browser history, and can analyze the system more deeply. Before cleaning, a preview is available, showing what exactly will be deleted.
Wise Disk Cleaner
A utility with quick and deep cleaning, as well as the ability to defragment HDD. After scanning, it shows a list of files that can be deleted. The deep mode analyzes rarely used system files.
Glary Utilities
A set of tools: system cleaning, duplicate search, registry error correction, and more. In 1-Click Maintenance mode, you can perform comprehensive maintenance. For more precise work, there are separate utilities, including disk cleaning.
